چکیده

This paper describes the theoretical basis and conceptual design of a dual-frequency radar and microwave link (radar/link) system capable of measuring simultaneously forward and backscatter from rainfall. The forward and backscattering radar/link system will enable small-scale rain studies essential in understanding the rainfall process, and make significant contributions to the investigation of radar inversion algorithms for the estimation of precipitation parameters that include liquid water content, median mass diameter, number concentration, and rainfall rate. The system will operate at the frequencies of 13.6 GHz and 35.5 GHz enabling the testing and validation of established radar retrieval algorithms such as those used by the Tropical Rain Mapping Mission (TRMM) singlefrequency radar, and those proposed for the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) dual-frequency radar.

Gpm Field Campaigns for Algorithm Physics

The Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) will employ a constellation of ~8 satellites to measure precipitation between +/-65o latitude[1]. The GPM constellation will fly microwave radiometers accompanied by a core “reference” satellite carrying a Ka-Ku band dual-frequency radar (DPR) and an improved passive microwave radiometer (GMI; frequencies 10-183 GHz). Fundamentally, the improved GPM remote...

Multiple scattering in observations of the GPM dual‐frequency precipitation radar: Evidence and impact on retrievals

This paper illustrates how multiple scattering signatures affect Global Precipitation Measuring (GPM) Mission Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) Ku and Ka band reflectivity measurements and how they are consistent with prelaunch assessments based on theoretical considerations and confirmed by airborne observations. In particular, in the presence of deep convection, certain characteristics...

P12a.8 Nasa Gpm/pmm Participation in the Canadian Cloudsat/calipso Validation Project (c3vp): Physical Process Studies in Snow

A complete understanding of the Earth’s hydrologic cycle necessarily dictates an ability to accurately quantify the global range of precipitation rates and types (rain, snow etc.). In turn, global observations of precipitation are most efficiently made from space. Great strides in the measurement of global tropical rainfall have occurred recently as a result of the NASA Tropical Rainfall Measur...

Rain retrieval over land from X-band spaceborne synthetic aperture radar: a model study

Numerous studies conducted as part of the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) program have demonstrated the benefits of space-borne precipitation measurements. The NASA Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) is an outgrowth of TRMM that will provide improved precipitation measurements and extend those measurements to higher latitudes. GPM satellite will carry a microwave imager coupled wit...

Prototype of NASA's global precipitation measurement mission ground validation system

NASA is developing a Ground Validation System (GVS) as one of its contributions to the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM). The GPM GVS provides an independent means for evaluation, diagnosis, and ultimately improvement of GPM spaceborne measurements and precipitation products. NASA's GPM GVS consists of three elements: field campaignslphysical validation, direct network validation, and modeling...
